Stretch Denim – A Stretch in Time
A Stretch in Time
Okay so we know that vintage non stretch denim is a thing right now in fashion but here at Mavi we challenge you to find any thing more comfortable, more versatile, more flattering and quite frankly more perfect then stretch denim. Here at Mavi if you ask the question“do jeans stretch?” We answer a resounding “YES!” Let us take you through our denim timeline below to convince you once and for all just how stretch denim is forever and always for you:
Ye olde rigid denim
Olden days to the late 1980s – denim literally didn’t change and manufacture of denim had a stock standard recipe that produced hard wearing, open yarn, indigo blue fabric that was cut into a high waisted, straight leg trouser. Its’ iconic shape sat high up on the waist and straight around the legs in an awkward but beguilingly rigid way. Mavi still does this classic style in the form of our LUCY Jean in Used 90s stretch which features 99% cotton (and only 1% elastane for good measure.)
The birth of stretchy denim
Cue the late 1990s and something exciting happened; denim could be form fitting, denim COULD stretch on over the hips and around the waist creating the ultimate sexy silhouette. Jeans could be more than jeans they could be stretch jeans. Just by adding a little bit of elastane into the classic cotton based recipe of denim a whole new era of jeans began. Mavi’s GOLD Collection features stretch denim in all it’s form fitting, technologically stretchy glory.
And now we go black
As aforementioned the denim recipe was always indigo in colour but somewhere in the late 80s some very clever person decided to dye their jeans black (In the denim industry this kind of dying is called ‘sulfer dying’). Cut to modern day and black jeans are as classic as indigo and we are not just talking grunge black (which is often slightly faded), how about we get really modern and we talk about black stretch jeans that keep their shape and their colour? Mavis’ ALISSA ANKLE Double Black GOLD REFORM will literally allow you to go to work all smart and professional and then on to a gig that evening where you can literally stage dive into crowd and keep your jean shape and colour.
How low did we go?
By the early noughties stretch jeans were sitting suddenly rather low rise at the waist and then the trend went to REALLY low rise. We are talking hip jutting undies’ skimming low, low waisted stretch jeans. MAVI still enjoys producing these low rise babies and our JESY Skinny Ankle Biker Jean brings the low rise waist into the modern era. (By the way low rise looks especially good on petite height frames)
Stretch denim pops with colour
So if we travel back again in time to around 1989 on our timeline we can herald in jeans in other colours. What was always supposed to be indigo and then was okay to be black was now suddenly any colour you care to imagine. Early versions of coloured jeans relied on other fabrics in a jeans shape to create the look but today dying cotton denim is possible and very effective. This seasom Mavi have re-imagined this colourful jeans vision with our version of millennial pink. Specifically produced for denim Mavi’s pink denim is a shade we like to call ‘cameo rose’. This season we have our JESY Low Rise Biker, ALISSA Ankle High Rise and our new Boyfriend Jean MIRA available in this rosy hue
Ripped von stretch
Denim of the ripped variety has quite a long history and let’s be honest as a trend it was probably a happy accident as carefree musicians and artists wore their same pair of jeans every day till they became thread bare from their hard wearing lifestyles. Ripped or raw edge denim especially on stretch denim is a more thought out trend these days with strategic chewed hems or frayed step hems, and little characteristic tears that can become your very own version as you settle into your stretch jeans. Our ALISSA ANKLE has all these features in spades and with the perfect high waistline and hip hugging action in its’ stretch for a fit you will literally not be able to take off (as seen above on our favourite model Phoebe Oh)
Skater boys move on to stretch mens’ jeans
An important note on stretch denim for boys. How on earth could skater boys EVER move on from their hip hanging, Calvin Klein logo exposing styles without stretch denim? Stretch denim for men is the sexy, fitted, cool option for men. Our JAMES skinny style with 98% cotton and 2% elastane gives just the right inkling of stretch to make these the denim about stretch rather than strangulation.
Military Stretch denim
Another stretch jean mainstay that can be tracked back to the noughties is Military denim. Kind of a no-brainer when it comes to creating a versatile look that can be worn with almost anything. Miltary denim is a great alternative for those that can’t stop wearing jeans and need to mix up their style without taking too much of a risk. Mavi’s JESY Biker comes in a perfect shade of military as does our cute turn up cuff short the PIXIE in Military twill (which is coming into stock soon).
So enjoy wearing your stiff non stretch jeans for the time being but we know (and let’s face it you do too) you will never be done with your stretch denim, never ever!
